Abstract

357,696. Projectile fuzes. PAGE, S. E., 27, Chancery Lane, London.-(Soc. Italiana E. Breda ; 9, Via Bordoni, Milan, Italy.) July 24, 1930, No. 22387. [Class 9 (i).] Relates to sensitive percussion fuzes of the kind in which a free mass is arranged between the fuze casing and a telescopic body containing the striker and detonating cap, and in which the said body is held extended by a spring and by means which are automatically removed by the flight of the bomb. According to the invention, two freely arranged masses are located one at each end of the fuze casing and bear against discs formed integral with the telescopic body. As shown in Fig. 1, a tubular stem 9<1> containing the detonating cap 12 is arranged to slide within a stem 8<1> containing the striker 11, the said stems being normally held extended by a spring 10 and slide 13. The stems 8<1>, 9<1> are formed integral with discs 8, 9 respectively, and between these discs and the fuze casing 4 are disposed two hemispherical masses 8<11>, 9<11>. The fuze casing is secured to the neck 2 of a bomb 1 containing the explosive charge. To the slide 13 is hinged, on a pin 15, a casing comprising two mutually hinged segmental shells 14o, 14, Fig. 2, which fit over the nose 5 of the fuze casing and are normally secured thereto by a pin 16. In operation, the pin 16 is withdrawn when the bomb is thrown. During the flight of the bomb, the shells 14o, 14 open out under the action of the air and withdraw the slide 13 from the fuze casing. On concussion, the masses 8<11>, 9<11> move laterally across the discs 8, 9 and thereby cause axial displacement of the stems 81, 91, which approach against the action of the spring 10. The masses 8<11>, 9<11> are made of a heavy, easily fusible material, such as an alloy of lead and bismuth, and they may contain explosive charges 80, 90. The discs also may be filled with explosive substances.
