Abstract
28,433. Elia, G. M. Dec. 9. Projectiles; projectile fuses.-Relates to bombs intended to be dropped from aeroplanes, and comprising a casing from which the bomb proper is expelled upwardly by a charge ignited on impact of the casing with the ground, the bomb being exploded after it has reached a certain height above the ground. According to the invention, the explosion of the bomb is caused by the pull of a cable connecting the bomb proper to the casing. As shown in Fig. 2, the bomb A is normally fixed in the casing B by screws b. On impact with the ground, a firing-pellet B<3> shears its retaining-projections b<3x> and ignites a percussion cap b<1>; this ignites a priming- composition b<x>, which fires a charge C and causes the expulsion of the bomb from its casing B. When the bomb reaches a given height, a cable D<2> attached to the bomb and to the casing becomes taut, and the pull of this cable first cocks a spring hammer D', then shears a pin d<1x>, whereupon the released hammer strikes a cap D<3>, and explodes the bomb. This fuse and its attached cable are enclosed in a tube d screwed to the bomb and to the casing, and weakened at d<x> to permit it to break when the bomb is discharged from the casing. To prevent premature action, the firing-pellet B<3> is normally held inoperative by a screwed spindle E<1> which in turn is held by a pin E<x>. The pin is removed before the bomb is dropped, and, during flight, the spindle E<1> is rotated by a winged tail E and thus unscrewed from the pellet B<3>. The winged tail E also serves to maintain the casing lowermost during flight. The bomb may be of the high-explosive or of the shrapnel type.
