[Class 83 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXIV and XXVI] Levers, links, rods &c. particularly valverocker arms and connecting-rods, are formed from two complementary sheet-metal pressings with a flat intermediate sheet-metal member between them, the pressings being shaped to engage the intermediate member along its edges and between its edges and welded thereto at the three lines of engagement. Two complementary parts 11 of a connecting-rod have each an inwardly pressed part 15, Fig. 3, and are welded along their edges and along the parts 15 to a flat sheet-metal member 12, thus providing a quadruple-closed hollow section. The small end comprises a split sleeve 16 with lugs 16a and against, which bear inwardly directed flanges 17, 18, Fig. 5, of openings in the parts 11, the flange 17 being narrower than 18 to provide room for a flange 19 on the member 12. The flanges are welded to the sleeve. The pressings and the member 12 are split at 21 in line with the slit in the sleeve and blocks 22 are welded to the pressings, the member 12 and the lugs to receive a grub screw. The sleeve 16 may be continuous. The big-end comprises two semi-cylindrical sleeve portions 23, 24. The portion 23 has, welded against its outer periphery, a channel-section sheet-steel pressing 25 which is welded to a flange 26 at the end of the intermediate member 12, the adjacent ends of the pressings 11 being welded to the flanges 28. At the ends of the pressing 25 are welded blocks 29, the pressings being bent over the blocks at 30. The cap is substantially similar and has welded to the part 24 a channelled sheet-metal pressing 32, Fig. 2, the flanges of which are deeper than those of the pressing 25, and which has blocks 23 welded to the ends thereof. For lubricating and cooling purposes, a pipe may be carried by one of the closed sections of the rod, or the fluid conveyed along one of the sections. The only parts to require machining should be the sleeve portions 23, 24 and the mating faces of the lugs 35.
