Abstract

526,282. Coking processes. STEINMETZ, W. March 11, 1939, No. 7928. Convention date, March 16, 1938. [Class 55 (i)] In the low temperature carbonization of coal, peat, shale and the like between 250‹ and 600‹C. and preferably between 450‹ and 550‹C. in the presence of catalysts, nitrogen is brought into direct and indirect contact with the charge during the whole coking period. Compounds of the heavy metals Fe, Cu, Ni &c. or of the light metals Al, Mg &c. are suitable as catalysts. The charge should contain its natural amount of moisture for example 16-20 per cent. by weight: A pressure of 10 atmospheres may be employed. The coke obtained may be used as " active carbon," and after being washed with an acid and an alkali in succession, its use as an adsorbent is improved.
