Abstract
1307127 Solid and liquid fuels M R MILNER and F B JOHNSTON 25 Sept 1970. 45920/70 Heading C5G [Also in Division F4] A solid or liquid hydrocarbon-containing fuel contains as additive for increasing combustion efficiency a material comprising at least 75% calcium-based montmorillonite clay, up to 15% alkali metal phosphate, and up to 10% boron oxide, percentages by weight. The preferred clay is bentonite, and the boron oxide may be replaced by source materials, e.g. boric acid or an alkali or alkaline earth metal borate, e.g. sodium borate, which are convertible thereto. A calcium-based clay is:one in which a substantial proportion of the metal ions replacing Al are Ca, and the clay has a higher content of Ca than of Na. The clay may be pretreated to achieve this state. Diluents for the additive include coal, coke, carbon blacks, diatomaceous earth, kerosene, fuel oil, cycle oil and residual oil, and an excess of the Ca-based montmorillonite clay. Specific phosphates are tricresyl phosphate and anhydrous trisodium phosphate. The additive may comprise 0À1 to 2À0% by weight of the fuel.
