Abstract

516,057. Cast iron. DEUTSCHE EISENWERKE AKT.-GES. June 13, 1938, Ko. 17551. Convention date, June 19, 1937. [Class 72] In the production of cast-iron in a cupola furnace, the coke charge is reduced to as little as about 40 per cent. by weight of the normal charge, and oxidisable steel wool, sheet wastes, sheet iron, boxes, shavings, or other iron poor in carbon, of small cross-sections and large surface is charged into the furnace in loose condition to act as a heat-carrier and in substitution for the rest of the usual coke charge. The other material is introduced into the furnace with the coke and is preferably mixed therewith. The ferrous part of the charge for the furnace consists of pig iron alone or with broken cast iron, and for the manufacture of high duty cast iron, steel or similar iron poor in carbon may also be added. When the coke charge amounts to 60 per cent. less than the usual charge, 30 per cent. of steel wool &c. is added, and when to 40-50 per cent. 15-20 per cent. of steel wool &c. is used.
