543,495. Agglomerating steel and cast-iron turnings etc.; scrap, consolidating decarburizing. GREENAWALT, J. E. Aug. 21, 1940, No. 13313. [Classes 72 and 82 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] Borings, turnings, filings, granules &c. of castiron are agglomerated and decarbonized by igniting the carbon content of the surface of the mass to which fuel such as coke breeze or anthracite duff may be added and drawing air through the latter so causing the mass to sinter and cake. A cake of a mixture of steel borings &c. and cast-iron borings may be similarly agglomerated and the cast-iron decarbonized or a cake of steel borings &c. mixed with fuel may be treated and the exposed part of the fuel being ignited at the surface and a cake produced. The extent of the de-carbonization of the cast-iron filings &c. may be controlled by regulating the amount of air used. Slag forming substances such as silica and lime may be added, as a binder, to the mass before treatment.
