175,888. Illingworth, S. R. Feb. 2, 1921. Addition to 164,104. Coking processes.-Coal is preheated at a temperature not exceeding 500‹ C., as described in the parent Specification, and the product is crushed, if necessary, and carbonized at a temperature not exceeding 600‹ C. The resulting semi-coke may be further carbonized at higher temperatures, for example 900‹ C. The coal is preferably preheated in thin layers, and under mechanical agitation; and temperatures of 350‹ C. and 400‹ C. are specified.
