[Class 40 (v)] In a multi-stage amplifier in which negative feedback is applied from the output to the input to reduce intermodulation products, an additional feedback is applied to an intermediate stage to alter the ratio between the " Johnson noise " voltage due to thermal agitation and the. Valve noise " voltage and compensated by a change in the amplifier gain so that the additional feedback unaffects either the total gain or the amount of the intermodulation products in the output. Preferably the " Johnson noise " and " valve noise " voltages are made equal, and their sum, at the output is made equal to the. effects of the intermodulation products. The Specification gives a mathematical analysis of the noise effects present in the amplifier and the effect of the negative feedback.
