Abstract

525,387. Aluminium fluoride; double salts. RUTGERSWERKE-AKT.-GES., and KAHL, L. Feb. 20, 1939, Nos. 5620 and 5621. Convention dates, March 9, 1938 and April 26, 1938. [Class 1 (iii)] Complex salts of aluminium fluoride with aluminium sulphate, chloride, bromide, iodide, or nitrate, which may be obtained by reacting fluorspar with the necessary aluminium salt, are heated either in solution or in the solid state to temperatures above 100‹ C., and preferably to 200-300‹ C., to decompose the complex salt and release aluminium fluoride. When the complex salts are heated in solution, aluminium fluoride is precipitated, and the solution of water-soluble aluminium salt remaining may be re-used with more fluorspar to re-form fresh complex fluoride, after separation, as by treatment with aluminium sulphate, of any soluble calcium salt that may be present by virtue of the mode of preparation of the complex fluoride. When the solid complex salt is heated, aluminium fluoride is isolated by leaching out the soluble aluminium salt together with the soluble calcium salt if present.
