Abstract

561,205. Gypsum. HIMSWORTH, F. R., LEFEBURE, V., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. July 13, 1942, No. 9700. [Class 1 (iii)] Gypsum, in a form suitable for conversion to plaster of Paris,. is obtained by hydrating ground anhydrite in the presence of a catalyst comprising one or more mono-varent sulphates and one or more trivalent sulphates with or without one or more divalent sulphates, the mono-valent sulphate being of alkali metal or ammonium, the trivalent being of aluminium or ferric iron, and the divalent zinc sulphate, cupric sulphate or ferrous sulphate and the percentage molecular composition falling within the area of the curve I on the diagram showing the molecular proportions of the several catalyst materials. Preferred proportions are 'those falling within the curve II and may comprise a mixture of potassium sulphate K2SO4 and aluminium sulphate, Al2(SO4)3.13H2O, in the ratio of 3 : 1 by weight. The pH of the solution may be controlled at less than 5 by addition of sulphuric acid, and the process may be conducted in the presence of seed crystals obtained as described in Specification 561,206.
