Abstract

Substantially dry chemical substances or compositions containing them, particularly fertilizers, e.g., ammonium nitrate, are rendered less susceptible to moisture by distributing a hydrophobic mineral, vegetable or animal (including fish) oil on the surface of the particles and covering the oiled particles with a coating of a calcined gypsum. The oils are preferably of low or medium viscosity or if viscous, solutions thereof in solvents such as carbon tetrachloride or naphtha are used, and may be applied by spraying. This may be carried out at temperatures up to 100 DEG C. The calcined gypsum specified may be plaster of paris, a soluble anhydrite or anhydrous calcium sulphate plaster containing sulphates and acid sulphates of alkali metals and ammonium, cupric, zinc, ferrous, ferric and aluminium sulphates and their double sulphates as hydration accelerators. The calcined gypsum may be introduced by adding it gradually to or by blowing it into the oiled composition. In a modified process, one or more of the components of a composition may be treated with the oil and the powder and then mixed with the other component or components.ALSO:Substantially dry fertilizers, e.g., ammonium nitrate, are rendered less susceptible to moisture by distributing a hydrophobic mineral, vegetable or animal (including fish) oil on the surface of the particles and covering the oiled particles with a coating of calcined gypsum.
