Abstract

Combination tanning processes.-A tanning material comprises a vegetable tanning substance, or substances, mixed in solution with a normal chromium salt and an aluminium salt the latter not being in sufficient proportion to cause tanning by itself. Neutral salts of the alkali or alkaline earth metals may be added to the solution. Suitable chromium salts may include the sulphate, chloride, acetate, nitrate or normal double salts e.g. the double sulphate of chromium and potassium. Suitable aluminium salts are the nitrate, sulphate, chloride and acetate. As an example, separate aqueous solutions of a vegetable tanr.ing substance, chromium sulphate, aluminium sulphate, sodium chloride, and sodium sulphate are mixed. A precipitate is formed which may be removed and is itself a tanning agent.
