Abstract
525,317. Surface condensers. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 17, 1939, No. 5348. Convention date, Feb. 17, 1938. [Class 64 (iii)] In an air &c. cooled condenser, e.g., for locomotive engines, comprising tubular units 14, 15, 16 each formed of main condenser sections 19 and after-cooler sections 21 and connected between vapour inlet and condensate outlet ducts 10, 23 respectively, drainage of the units is ensured by reducing the pressure at the outlet end of the duct 23. Thus, the hotwell 24 into which the duct 23 discharges is connected by a pipe 32 to the vapour inlet header 17 of the unit 14 the pressure in which is maintained lower than that in the other units by reducing the vapour supply thereto from the duct 10 by means of a restriction 31 in the pipe 11. Vapour and incondensable gases entering the duct 23 from the units 15, 16 may pass up the pipe 22 into the unit 14. The incondensable gases are withdrawn from the units through restricted pipes 25 connected to a main 26 which communicates with an air-pump 27. In a modification, the unit 14 may have a separate drain 34, Fig. 2, to the hotwell.
