Abstract
285,085. Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Morgan. D. W. R.). Feb. 11, 1927, [Convention date]. Surface condensers.- In a surface condenser in which the cooling tubes 17 are arranged in an annular belt, the cooling water entering the header 15 through a central portion 32 first passes down a central passage 19 to the header 16 before flowing on its return path over the tubes 17, and this cools an offtake trunk 29 through which the incondensable gases are withdrawn. The trunk 29 is constructed in three portions to which are connected by expansion joints 30 circular manifolds having radially disposed passages 28 and air inlets 27. The tubes 17 are supported on tube plates 13, 14 and intermediate plates 21, 22, the trunk 19 being also supported on tubes 13, 14, expansion being allowed by a stuffing box 20<1>. Modifications are described in which the trunk 19 is situated exteriorly of the cooling tubes and in which the construction is adapted to a condenser of the down flow type.
