Condensers, atmospheric and like.-A multipass gas condenser providing gas and cooling water velocities sufficiently high to scrub off heat-insulating film from the transfer surfaces comprises a shell 1 with gas inlet 2 and outlet 4, and chambers 3 formed by baffles 8 so spaced as to provide a path of diminishing cross-sectional area for the gas, which is thereby caused to flow at uniform velocity. Cooling water enters at an inlet 10 and is multipassed through the condenser tubes 5 to an outlet 15, baffles 11, 12 separating upper and lower water header compartments 13, 14 respectively. Openings 20 at each baffle and at the gas connections are provided for oil sprays to remove naphthalene. Tubes not exceeding 1¥ inches in diameter and longer than 22 feet may be employed in the construction shown.
