Description

Patented Oct. 11, 1932 hnrrs s'rArss ATENT OFFICE 'cHAnLns wamwarenr, or ERIE; PENNSYLVANIA 7 UNIT INTERCO OLER Application filed February 18, 1931. Serial No. 516,711.
This invention relates to intercoolers for multl-c-ylinder a1r compressors and has for an object the provision of a unit intercooler wherein separate units may be attached to the low and high pressure cylinders between their respective outlet and inlet ports, whereby the air may be subjected to the action of a cooling agent as soon as it leaves the low pressure cylinder and immediately before it enters the high pressure cylinder.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an intercooler unit of novel construction wherein the water or other coolmg.
agent is directed forward and backward around the air pipes or passages, so as to pro-" Figure 2 is a top plan view of one of the intercooler units. 1
Fi ure 3 is a sectional View taken on the line AVA shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Figure 1 is an end View of the mixing chamber.
Figure 5 is a sectional view of the same.
Figures 6 and 7 are sectional views taken respectively on the lines 66and 7 7 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates the low pressure cylinder of a mul-= ti-cylinder air compressor, the high pressure cylinder being indicated at 11. These compressor cylinders may be'of the usual or any preferred construction, and the low pressure cylinder 10 has connected to its'outlet side an 'intercooler unit 12, while the high pressure intercooler unit 13. The intercooler- units 12 and 13 are connected by a pipe or conduit 14 in which is included a mixing chamber 15,
the latter being provided with re-versely inclined baffles 16.
Theintercooler units 12 and 13 arefof like construction, in that each 'unit includes a housing 17 whose sides may include one vor more removable plates 18. This permits of ready access to the interior of the housing.
cylinder 11 has connected to its inlet side an The intercooler units further each include a horizontally arranged sectional partition, the outer section 19 of which is carried-by the housing 17, while the inner section 20 is circular and is arranged within the outer section upon substantially the sameplanea This divides the housing horizontally and communication is established upon opposite sides of the partition by means of an opening 21" which is provided by an interrupted portion of the outer section 19. The inner section 20 of the horizontal partition is provided with openings for the passage of air tubes 22, the opposite ends of these tubes being received within the headers or tube sheets 28 located at opposite ends of the housing. These head ers or tube sheets are connected by a central belt or rod 24 and their shouldered edges 25 are held against the shouldered edges 26 provided around the ends of the housing 17 Oppositely located vertically arranged baffles 27 extend inwardly from the plates 18 to the inner section 20 of the horizontal partition. A water inlet 28 and a water outlet 29 are provided in one side of the housing opposite the opening or passage'21, so that water entering the housing through the opening 28 must pass horizontally across the housing around'the pipes 22, upward through the opening 21 and again across the housing around the pipes to the; outlet 29. A maXi-' mum cooling effect is thus provided.
A connection 30 is provided between the I outlet port of the low pressure cylinder and the intercooler unit 12, while a connection 31 is provided between the intercooler unit 13 and the inlet of the high pressure cylinder 11. This last mentioned connection provides a passage 32 for the air, and this passage extends upward as shown at 33 toprovide a trap 34. This trap collects the condensate or moisture which passes outward through a discharge pipe 35. The inner end of the a passage 32 is provided with a baffle plate 36 so as to prevent any moisture from entering the passage-32. :1 q The invention" is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor."
v m details of construction and the rightis here in reserved to make such changes'as properly fall'within the scope of the appended claim. 7
Having described the invention' what is' claimed is: (V k In combination, a compressor including high and low pressure cylinders, ase'parate intercooler unit'connected with each cylin- *der', means providing communicationbe- V tween the intercooler units, and a mixing chamber included in the last 'mentioned means.
