Abstract

Surface condensers. - Equal penetration of steam among the tubes A' at the cooling-water inlet and outlet ends is ensured by dividing the condenser into two or more compartments by partitions E, Fig. 3, and providing the compartments with separate air-witihdrawal outlets each connected to a separate evacuating apparatus, so that different degrees of vacuum are maintained in each compartment. Condensate is withdrawn from the compartment through openings B by a pump B<2>, and air &c. through openings M. Fig. 2, leading through surface or spray coolers C to vacuum pumps. Part of the cooling water entering by the head G circulates through the cooling- devices C and is returned through an inlet S and the lower tubes to the outlet header H. The distribution of steam in each compartment may be arranged by intermediate tube sheets F<1 >and perforated baffles F so that the cooler part receives the greater proportion of steam.
