Abstract

536,114. Surface condensers. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 4, 1940, No. 255. Convention date, Jan 5, 1939. [Class 64 (iii)] A surface condenser comprising an upper inlet header 10 for elastic fluid to be condensed and a lower header 12 for condensate has between these. headers wide flat heat-exchanging tubes 14 providing passages 20 of decreasing cross sectional area from the upper to the lower header and adjoining passages 21 of decreasing cross sectional area extending up from the lower header to a point adjacent the upper header and pipes 23 communicating with the upper ends of the passages 21 for conducting non-condensibles, e.g. air, therefrom. A partition 17 extends in each tube from the front of the upper header to the centre of the lower header to form the tapered passages, which thus have openings of equal size in the lower header; or the passages are formed of separate tubes The pipe 23 for withdrawing, air through an ejector or vacuum pump may be arranged in an auxiliary header adjacent the. upper header and in communication with the upwardly tapered passages 21. The partition 17 has an upper flange 22 attached to the upper flange of the tube and side flanges 18, one of which is secured to the tube. Air is drawn over the tubes which have fins 16 and extend across the depth of the condenser.
