Abstract

A mercury turbine condenser system comprises a mercury turbine 10 superimposed above a condenser casing 14, connected to the turbine exhaust, which totally encloses a circulation type boiler 15--21. The horizontal cross-section of the condenser casing gradually decreases in a downward direction so that mercury vapour flows to the lower part of the casing at a substantially constant velocity. The boiler comprises lower headers 15, 16, 17, connected to upper headers 18, 19 by up-tubes 20 and wider downtubes 21, a cooling fluid such as water being conducted to the intermediate lower header 15. Non-condensable gases are extracted from the coolest part of the condenser by outlet tubes 29, 30 connected to auxiliary condensers 31, 32, the cooling tubes 37 of which are connected through headers 34 to the cooling circulation of the main condenser by pipes 27, 28 and to cooling fluid inlet pipes 38 through headers 35. Non-condensable gases, such as <PICT:0449220/III/1> air, are removed from the system through the discharge conduit 39 and condensed mercury through conduits 40, 41.
