Abstract

458,345. Surface condensers; indirectly-heated steam boilers. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. May 15, 1936, No. 13826. Convention date, May 16, 1935. [Classes 64 (iii) and 123 (ii)] A surface condenser, e.g. for use in mercuryvapour turbines in which steam is generated by the condensation of the vapour exhausted from the turbines, comprises a shell 10 having a vapour inlet 14, condensate outlet 15, cooling tubes depending from a water header 11 having a steam outlet 18 and a perforate air exhaust tube 19, the area of the perforations per unit length of the tube decreasing towards the upper outlet end thereof. The flow of air into the condensate outlet is reduced by the provision of a baffle 50 which directs a stream of vapour over the mouth of the outlet. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the air withdrawn through the perforate tube 38 passes into a water preheater 41 having an inlet 48, an outlet 49, an air outlet 46, and a condensate outlet 47. A stream of vapour is directed over the main condensate outlet 33 by a tube 52.
