[Class 38 (ii)] A polyphase converter comprising a multianode discharge device 1 associated with n groups of p-phase transformer secondaries 3 ... 6 is caused to operate in effect as a 2np-phase converter by connecting in parallel with the main discharge device an auxiliary discharge device 13 the anodes of which are supplied from auxiliary windings energized by the interphase transformer 7 with a turn ratio The auxiliary windings may be on the same core as the interphase transformer or they may comprise a separate transformer connected to the interphase transformer. Specifications 289,152 and 301,767, [both in Class 38 (ii)], are referred to in connection with the interphase transformer construction. Fuses may be incorporated in the anode leads of the auxiliary discharge device or in the connections between the interphase transformer and the auxiliary windings associated therewith, and a circuit breaker may be included in the lead connecting the cathodes of the two discharge devices so that the auxiliary discharge device may be cut-out to give normal np-phase operation.
