[Class 70] [Also in Group XXXVI] A flexible electrical insulation comprises vulcanized rubber and polystyrene, the latter comprising not more than 40 per cent. by weight of the rubber in the mixture. The rubber, either standard plantation or deproteinized, and polystyrene are mixed at the softening temperature of the latter, and materials such as mercaptobenzothiazole, diortho-tolylguanidine or sulphur may be added to vulcanize the rubber ; fillers such as zinc oxide or clay may also be added. One example comprises, by weight, rubber 75 parts, polystyrene 25 parts, zinc oxide 0.75 parts, zinc laurate 0.75 parts, and tetramethyl-thiuram-disulphide 2.6 parts. For a protective sheath for an X-ray cable, equal weights of deproteinized rubber and polystyrene are mixed at 300‹F. and of this, 50 parts by weight are mixed with deproteinized rubber 50 parts, zinc oxide 0.75 parts, zinc laurate 0.75 parts, stearic acid 0.75 parts, mercaptobenzothiazole 1.25 parts, diorthotolylguanidine 1.25 parts, and sulphur 1.25 parts.
