Abstract

A composition of polyethylene or a copolymer thereof, at least 5% by weight of a neutral or alkaline filler, and at least 0,5% by weight based on the polymer of an organic peroxide of general formula ROOR1 where R and R1 are monovalent a -aryl substituted alkyl radicals, is cured by heating to yield products of increased strength and shape stability. The components are intensively mixed by milling or shear mixing at an elevated temperature not above 260 DEG F. The filler may be carbon black, preferably not exceeding 1 micron in size, and peroxides listed are dicumyl, di (a -phenylethyl), di (a -p-isopropylcumyl), di (a -p-nitrocumyl), a -cumyl, a -t-butylcumyl, a -cumyl-a -p-xylyl, a -cumyl-a -diphenylmethyl, a -cumyl-a -a 1-naphthylmethyl and a -cumyl-2-p-nitrocumyl peroxides.
