Abstract
A natural or synthetic rubber composition contains a minor amount by weight of polythene of specific gravity more than 0.92. The rubber and polythene may be blended at a temperature equal to or greater than the melting point of the polythene. Preferably, the weight of the polythene is between 10 and 35% of the combined weight of rubber and polythene. The synthetic rubber may consist of a butadiene-styrene or isoprene-butadiene copolymer. When the composition is vulcanized it has high tensile strength, modulus, and elongation at break, resistance to ozone attack, and electrical resistivity. It is thus useful in the manufacture of electric cables, tyres, and microcellular soles for footwear. In one example, a microcellular material is prepared by vulcanizing in a press a composition containing (in parts by weight) isoprene-butadiene copolymer 100 and polythene 30, or butadiene/styrene copolymer 100 and polythene (of specific gravity 0.94) 10, or pale crepe 100 and polythene 15, calcium silicate 60, china clay 30, purified wood cellulose 15, petroleum jelly 10, and small amounts of zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, sulphur, accelerators, antioxidant, and, as blowing agent, N,N1-dinitrosopentamethylene, with or without p-dinitrosobenzene.
