Abstract

A rubber composition particularly for coating electric cables comprises a rubber mix and a fire-resistant filler including a chlorinated pitch having preferably a high chlorine content, for example 30 per cent. Vegetable, animal or mineral pitch may be used and selenium is preferably added. A suitable filler consists of a carbonate of Group 2 of the Periodic table, e.g. alkaline earth, zinc or magnesium carbonate, 30-42, selenium 1-5, and chlorinated pitch 5-20 per cent of the total weight of the composition. Preferably an elastic cotton seed pitch is melted and ozokerite added to make the mix workable at about 300 DEG F. Sulphur chloride is added with stirring and the mass allowed to cool, when it solidifies. It is then milled, and mixed with chlorinated lime. A suitable rubber composition has the percentage composition by weight: smoked sheet rubber 35, magnesium carbonate 41,5, selenium 1, carbon black 4,5, chlorinated elastic cotton seed pitch 12,5, kaolin 2, sulphur 2, anti-oxidant 1, and vulcanization accelerator 0,5. Part of the magnesium carbonate, up to 5 per cent of the total weight, may be replaced by zinc oxide or French chalk. The composition may be applied as a sheathing to a cable in any known manner.
