Abstract

A putty is made by incorporating a finely divided insoluble filler with mixtures of normally solid chloronaphthalenes, a solid natural resin and a resin oil obtained on distilling resin. The proportion of resin plus resin oil must be greater than 10 per cent by weight of the chloronaphthalene, and the proportion of filler is preferably greater still. Examples of suitable fillers are: china clay, kieselguhr, asbestos powder, metallic oxides, carbon in various forms, woodmeal, calcium carbonate, barium sulphate, powdered mica, silica. The prepared chloronaphthalenes are produced by direct chlorination of naphthalene until the setting point is 60 DEG C. or higher. The product may be used in the crude form, or after treatment with an alkali, or after distillation under reduced pressure. Mixtures of chloronaphthalenes of different setting points may be used. The mixture may be made by melting the chloronaphthalene adding the resin and resin oil while agitating, and then adding the filler, the mass being kneaded while cooling. Examples are given showing suitable proportions, non-hardening compositions having china clay as filler, while hard-setting compositions may have a calcium salt, for example, the carbonate, as filler.
