Abstract
An adhesive is made by adding a mixture of polychloroprene and magnesium oxide to a solution of a phenol-aldehyde resin in a solvent system for polychloroprene and intimately mixing the resultant mixture, the weight of magnesium oxide being from 7-15 times the weight of magnesium oxide required for complete reaction between the resin and the magnesium oxide in the formation of a magnesium resinate. The amount of oxide may be 20 to 40 parts and the resin solution 20 to 45 parts of p-tertiary butyl phenol-formaldehyde resin in toluene, all per 100 polychloroprene. The solvent may be a blend comprising toluene, ethyl acetate, white gasoline and trichloroethylene while the polychloroprene preferably is of the thiuram - disulphide - stabilized non - sulphur modified type. The p-tertiary butyl phenolformaldehyde resin may be replaced by p-phenyl phenol-formaldehyde resin. Other adjuvants associated with such adhesive cements e.g. antioxidants, fillers and vulcanizing agents, such as zinc oxide, may be added. The adhesive is vulcanized in use.
