Abstract

Insulating, are suppressing members such as the walls of an arc-chute, switch or fuse housing or the like are moulded from a composition containing 25-80% of hydrated alumina and 10-50% of a binder generally as described in Specification 837,673 with the addition of a small percentage of an arc interrupting additive which may comprise a compound of one or more of the following electronegative elements: F, Cl, Br, I, S, P or B with one another or with Mg, Al, Zr, Zn, Mo or with the radical NH4-, the compound being bound by predominantly covalent bonds. Alternatively, it may be a halogenated hydrocarbon. The composition may also include a filler such as aluminium oxide or magnesium oxide or glass or asbestos fibre or one which will absorb a liquid additive, e.g. carbon tetrachloride absorbed in wood flour. The binder may be a thermosetting resin such as melamine, epoxy, urea, polyester or phenolic or elastomers such as butyl rubber or a thermoplastic such as polyethelene, polypropylene, polyamide, acetal or acrylic resins or calcium containing material such as Portland cement or mixtures of shale, clays and lime. A number of specific examples of the composition are described with details of results obtained using them in a standard test apparatus (Fig. 5, not shown).
