Abstract

A switch or fuse has an arc-suppressing rigid self-supporting enclosure or shield disposed along the path of an arc which may form between conductive elements, the enclosure or shield being formed by a non-ceramic process by moulding a composition comprising a water-insoluble binder constituting between 10% and 65% by weight of the composition and an arc-suppressing substance consisting of hydrated alumina and/or hydrated magnesia and constituting at least 5% by weight of the composition. The binder may be a phenolic, urea, melamine, silicone or polyester resin, or a calcium-containing material such as Portland cement or mixtures of shales, clays and lime. The composition may also include fillers such as fly ash, mica, barytes, zircon, silica, whiting, limestone and asbestos.
