Abstract

523,164. Trueing grinding-wheels. COVENTRY GAUGE & TOOL CO., Ltd., HARLEY, S. J., and WAINWRIGHT, J. E. Dec. 23, 1938, No. 37536. [Class 60] Grinding-wheels, particularly those for screw threads, are dressed to form by a device in which the movement of the dressing tools is obtained by a combination of polar and rectilinear motions and one or more inclined surfaces. The tools c are carried by a two-armed member having a sleeve d pivoted and sliding on a bar g mounted in lugs h in a bar e adjustably secured at f to the grinding machine table or frame. Pivotal movement of the tools away from the wheel is limited by a stop k and abutment j, and this is first set in correct relation to the periphery of the wheel. Gauge blocks corresponding to the depth of thread are then placed on locating surfaces beneath screws i which are adjusted into contact and the blocks are removed. The arms d<SP>1</SP>, d<SP>2</SP> measured to the tools and the screws i respectively are either equal or are in some simple ratio to facilitate this adjustment. Lateral movement of the sleeve is controlled by abutments l, one corresponding to each tool and co-operating with the inclined block m pivoted at n swinging between adjustable stops o, and provided with a screw clamp q. As the arm rocks the interaction of the abutments l and the block m produces a simultaneous lateral movement. In a modification the pivot n is below' the line of the abutments l and the block swings over against the proper stop o automatically, the clamping screw being dispensed with. A single tool and abutment can be used for dressing both sides of the wheel, the tool being swung through'an angle of 180 degrees.
