[Class 120 (ii)] In winding continuous elastic thread, e.g., in forming golf balls or the like, the thread is tensioned by confining it under pressure between elastic belts and elongating the belts so as to elongate the thread, each belt may pass around a pair of spaced pulleys operating at different speeds. As shown the supply spool 3 is carried by a pivoted holder 14 and the thread rests upon a driving roller 20 driven from the tensioning mechanism comprising a pair of belts 25, 26 carried by pairs of spaced pulleys 27, 28 and 34, 35 respectively. The belt 25 is tensioned by a roller 29 carried by a pivoted and spring- pressed arm 30 and the belt 26 by a similar roller 41 co-operating with an intermediate guide roller 36; the pulley 34 may be tensioned and its position adjusted by mounting it in a pivoted yoke 38 working against a tensioning device 39, 40. The thread from the supply spool 3 passes between the belts and from the pulley 35 over an idler roller 44 to the ball 8 supported by a resilient belt 7 carried by a pair of conical rollers 5, 6 and the belt 26 is driven from the roller 5 by a gear wheel 47 engaging a wheel 48 on the pulley 35, which also carries a gear wheel 49 engaging a gear 50 on the pulley 28 of the belt 25; the pulley 28 is also geared to the pulley 27 and to the roller 20. The ball 8 is engaged by a detector wheel 9 carried by a spring-controlled arm 10 and when the ball attains a given size the wheel 9 causes the machine to stop.
