The spindles or flyers 10 on one side of a textile spinning frame are driven by an endless belt 12 extending the length of the frame, eccentrically mounted jockey pulleys 14 being associated with pairs of spindles or flyers 10 so that the angle of contact of the belt with the spindles may be adjusted to provide the required driving force. The belt 12 runs, at each end of the frame, about a tension pulley 16 at least one of which is driven. The tension pulley shown is mounted on a carriage 17 which runs on rails 18 and carries a rack 19 engaged by a pinion 20. To adjust the tension in the belt 12 (e.g. after slackening in use) the carriage 17 is moved by the rack and pinion arrangement, operated by a hurdle 23; a ratchet 22 mounted on a shaft 21 which also carries the pinion 20 is engaged by a pawl to hold the carriage 17 in its adjusted position. The spindles or flyers on each side of the frame may be driven at different speeds.
