Abstract

1,139,211. Strengthening bodies by winding. SIMON-CARVES Ltd. (K. Vogt, and A. Brandestini). 19 Jan., 1966 [20 Oct., 1964], No. 42649/64. Heading B8G. A method of winding a tensioned wire 33 Fig. 1, within a groove 2 of an externally grooved container 1 comprises the steps of locating a winding unit 3 adjacent to said groove 2 by means of groove location members 4 attached to said winding means 3 and movable within said groove 2, displaceably holding the winding means 3 against the container 1 by means of an endless girdle member 24 extending thereabout, securing one end of the wire 33 to the container 1, and displacing the winding unit 3 about the container 1 to draw off wire from the wire supply at a rate less than the rate of displacement of the winding unit 3 about the container 1 so as to apply a predetermined tension to the wire 33 wound about the container 1. As shown the winding unit 3 carries a reel of wire 19 that passes back and forth around grooved pulleys 9 and 10 before being fed to a guide 23 and thence into the groove 2 of the container 1. The endless girdle 24 is a chain passing around sprocket wheels 11 and 16. The sprocket wheel 11 and pulley 9 are mounted on one driven shaft 12 and the sprocket wheel 16 and pulley 14 are mounted on a common shaft 17. A petrol, diesel or electric motor 16 drives the pulley 9 via a slipping clutch 10, and also drives sprocket wheel 11, the diameter of which is slightly greater than that of the pulley wheel 9, to ensure that the rate of travel of the carriage 3 around the container 1 is greater than the rate at which the wire is drawn off the reel 19, to ensure that the wire is suitably tensioned. The chain 24 may be provided with pins 35 that co-operate with a screw mechanism 30 to ensure that the wire traversing guide 23 is displaced by the width of the wire each time the winding unit has circled the container 1 once. The groove location members 4 are wheels and the winding unit 3 is provided with wheels 5 that ride on the surface of the container 1. Instead of the pins 35 and the screw 30 there may be suitable gearing between the shaft 17 and the traversing member 23. Figs. 3, 4 and 5 (not shown) illustrate the manner in which the wire 33 may be clamped to the container 1 at the start and the finish of a winding operation.
