Abstract

1512531 Traversing; tensioning; doffing rubber strip in a winding machine F G CARDINAL and R V CARDINAL 21 April 1975 16448/75 Headings DID D1F and D1J [Also in Divisions B7 and F2] A machine for winding rubber strip onto a spool 20, Fig. 7, comprises:-a horizontal spindle 22b for supporting a spool 20; spoolengaging means 40 rotating with the spindle 22b; drive means 85 for rotating the spindle 22b and thus the spool 20, the drive means 85 including torque-limiting means 86 to control the tension in the strip being wound on the spool 20; traversing means 94 driven by the drive means 85 for traversing the rubber strip onto the spool 20; and spool ejector means 116, 118 for pushing a spool 20 off the spindle 22b. In Fig. 7 torque-limiting means 86 is stated to be an eddy current drive arrangement adjusted to disengage the output shaft 87 at a predetermined torque. Any equivalent electrical, mechanical or other torque limiting control may be provided between the motor 85 and the spindle 22b. The output shaft 87 of the torque limiting means 86 is transmitted to a gear box 89 having a single input 90 and two outputs, one at 91 driving the spindle 22b and one at 92 driving the traverse mechanism 94. Traverse means. The traverse means 94 is motivated by an endless chain 106 running around spaced sprockets 107, 108. The chain 106 carries drive pins 104 that extend into an elongated slot 102 in a slide block 100. Thus, whilst the pins 104 are on the upper run of the endless chain the pins 104 are at the upper end of the slot 102; but as the pins then pass around a sprocket 107. or 108, the pins 104 move to the lower end of the slot 102. The slide block 100 is thus caused to reciprocate and is coupled to the traverse means 94 by a rod 98. Doffing means. When the spool 20 is fully wound a fluid actuated cylinder 116 forces a ram 118 to the right in Fig. 7. The ram 118 then abuts against both the spool 20 and a wheeled platform 120 positioned under the spool 20. Both the spool 20 and the platform 120 are then forced to the right until the spool 20 leaves its spindle 22b and drops onto the platform 120. Thereafter, the spool can be rolled off the platform 120 and down ramps to the floor of a building for storage or for removal by a cart 26, Fig. 3. Cart. The fully wound and doffed spools 20 can be picked up by a cart 26, Fig. 3, for transport to a tyre re-mould extruder. The cart 26 has two upright support posts 54 and on each post 54 is a clevis 56 which, when in the position shown in full lines, can be brought into engagement with the spool mandrel 39. When a pair of lever arms 66 are swung from the full line setting to the broken line setting the clevises 56 are rocked from their full line setting to their broken line setting and the spool 20 is then raised-up off the floor. The arms 66 may carry a handle 72 for pushing the cart. Alternatively the handle 72 may be separate from the arms 66 so as to be permanently in a pushing setting.
