[Class 39 (i)] In an electro-magnetic deflecting system for a cathode-ray tube used for television or as a beam valve the coils 7 for line deflections surround a former 6 on the tube neck the side limbs of the magnetic circuits being completed by a rectangle 9a and two U- shaped laminae 9b, 9c; the axes of the coils 7 are on the main limb of the magnetic circuit which passes through the tube. The centres of the coils 8 for frame deflection are also on this line but their axes are at right angles thereto ; the external magnetic circuit is continued through laminae 11, wooden spacing blocks 10 separating all the laminae. The laminae 9b,c are of metal known by the Registered Trade Mark " Rhometal" and the others of metal known by the Registered Trade Mark "Stalloy," the former having higher permeability at line frequency than the latter. The coils 8 mav be enclosed in electrostatic screens and' the coils 7 operated symmetrically with respect to earth. The coils 8 may be adjustable to arrange for neutralization of possible pick-up between the coils.
