Abstract
530,523. Cathode-ray tubes. TELEFUNKEN GES FUR DRAHTLOSE TELEGRAPHIE. June 12, 1939, No. 17115. Convention date, June 11, 1938. [Class 39 (i)] To reduce coma and astigmatism, a deflecting coil arrangement comprises two crossed coil elements each consisting of one or more turns and embracing a space through which the beam to be deflected is passed. In place of two crossed coil elements, a pair of windings may be used, each of one or more turns and bent so as to be equivalent magnetically to the two crossed elements. Fig. 5 shows a separate pair of crossed coil elements 11, 12 wound on the neck. of a tube 3 in planes which intersect in a line passing through the tube axis, the plane which includes this line and the tube axis being such as to bisect the angle between the intersecting planes. At the crossover points the windings may be flattened, as shown in Fig. 8a, or otherwise arranged to give no swelling of the joint coil thickness. Numbers of turns may be used side by side, so that each element is a solenoid with inclined turns. Fig. 6 shows a form in which separate windings 21, 22, each bent to lie in two winding planes and equivalent to the form shown in Fig. 5, are used. The corners may be sharp, as at 23, or rounded. Ferromagnetic material may be used with the coils, which may, alternatively, be mounted on formers or arranged freely within or in contact with the inner surface of the tube. They may also be used in association with other electromagnetic or electrostatic deflection systems. For deflecting the beam in co-ordinate directions, several pairs of coils may be used, next to or one above each other, and the turns of each coil element may be connected in any predetermined winding scheme. Specification 482,195 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that if the angle at which the coil elements intersect is variable, the sensitivity may be thereby controlled. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
