Abstract

545,414. Cathode-ray tubes. PHILCO RADIO & TELEVISION CORPORATION. Aug. 15, 1940, No. 13048. Convention date, Oct. 21, 1939. [Class 39 (i)] In a cathode-ray tube in which the ray is deflected by magnetic coils these coils are so designed that the deflected ray is everywhere approximately perpendicular to the magnetic lines of force; it is stated that defocusing is thus prevented. This result is obtained by making the section of the coil system perpendicular to the axis of the tube square or rectangular. Fig. 2 shows coils 13, 15 each occupying one face of a square prism, the corresponding coils occupying the opposite faces. The end turns 14, 16 of the coils are bent back as shown, and may be deformed to modify the field. The coil is surrounded by a magnetic yoke 19. In a modification the coils are cylindrical and fit the neck of the tube, but the yoke retains its rectangular shape, being separated from the coils by non- magnetic spacers.
