Abstract

520,370. Airships. FORTON, G. April 21, 1939, No. 12099. [Class 4] An airship is divided by a partition 8 into an upper gas chamber 9 and a lower load chamber 10, and has laterally opposed openings 12 in the upper part, housing propellers 13, approximately half of each propeller projecting , from the airship envelope. The propellers 13 are of very coarse pitch in order to exert mainly lifting effort, the propellers on opposite sides rotating in opposite directions, and each being driven by a separate engine. Screws 17 amidships provide forward propulsion. Horizontal paddles 20 in the forward part of the ship are used to steer and brake the ship.
