Abstract
342,260. Propelling and steering aircraft and submarines. SPONZA, S., Sibenik, Jugoslavia. Aug. 21, 1929, No. 25436. [Classes 4 and 114.] In a submarine or airship (Fig. 3) for horizontal propulsion the supporting fluid is drawn in by propellers d, d<1>, through the openings m1, m<1>1, n1, n<1> and expelled through corresponding openings in the stern. By suitable manipulation of louvres p, p<1>, r, r<1> the vessel can be steered both vertically and horizontally. With the propellers d, d<1>, running in opposite senses, air is compressed in the conduit a, and on being allowed to escape by passages k, k<1>, causes the craft to fall or rise. In a modification applied to craft heavier than air lift is obtained by running the propellers in opposite directions, and directing the air thus compressed from the conduit into a space under a semi-cylindrical surface whence it escapes downwards. Rudders are used for vertical and horizontal control.
