Helicopters; machines supported by direct fluid pressure apparatus; propelling; steering.-Flying machines of the type having a covered frame and vaned propellers e, f rotating in opposite directions on horizontal longitudinal axes d disposed at each side, have the outside portions of the propellers acting on the air for upward propulsion and the inside portions coacting with curved plates g, g<1> so that air is forced between the plates up under the supporting plane i. The air escaping laterally from under the plane also produces attenuation of the air above the plane. The space under the plane is closed at one end to obviate longitudinal draught. The propelling propellers l may be geared to the shafts d, but means are provided for driving the propellers at different speeds and for starting and stopping them independently of the lifting propellers.
