Abstract

260,059. Roos, W. July 31, 1925. Planes, construction of; propelling.-An aerofoil having a rotatable roller, or aligned rotatable rollers 1, disposed parallel to its leading edge, is also provided with stream-lined fixed end-shields 2<1> which prevent loss of pressure on the ends of the aerofoil. The main portion 2 of the aerofoil has its lower surface of slightly concave shape. and comprises a framework including a hollow front spar 4, Figs. 4 and 6, an I-section rear spar 5, and front and rear rib plates 6, 7. The roller 1, which extends across the entire span of the plane and is driven from a separate engine 3 so that its speed of rotation may be varied independently of the main propelling unit, is mounted on hub members 12 fixed to a central shaft 11, journaled in ball-bearings 10 held between semicircular mountings 8, 9 bolted together. The end-shields 2<1> are fixed vertically at the wing- tips.
