Abstract
519,493. Electric battery lamps. ARDEN, T. R. Nov. 4, 1938, No. 32018. [Class 39 (ii)] A battery lamp is constructed to contain two sets of cells 60, of semi-cylindrical cross-section. Normally only one set is used to supply the lamp when the usual switch is closed. When this set is depleted, the other set is brought in circuit by a halfrotation . of the end-cap 45. Whereupon a "D" aperture in the cap 45 is aligned with a similar aperture in disc 44 and the exhausted set is expelled by a spring contact plunger 31. When. a new set is inserted in lieu of the exhausted set, the disc 44 is half rotated so as to retain the new set, which thereupon becomes the reserve set. When one set of cells is absent, the corresponding contact' plunger 31 prepares the circuit of an indicator lamp which is illuminated when the main lamp is energized so as to give a warning that the casing does not contain a reserve set. Alternatively the 'plunger 31 may operate a shutter to uncover an indicator window. By removal of the cap .45 a normal cylindrical type battery can be inserted in the casing in place of the special cross-section batteries.
