439,389. Electric-battery lamps. HAMMOND, W. C., 1600, Douglass Avenue, Kalamazoo, Michigan, U.S.A. Nov. 22, 1934, No. 33629. Convention date, Nov. 22, 1933. [Class 39 (ii)] An electric-battery lamp is provided with one cell which is fixed within the casing and a second cell movably mounted therein and adapted, on being moved, to effect the switching on and off of the lamp. In the example the cell 11 is fixed at one end of a tubular casing 10, the movable cell 12 being disposed at the other end and projecting therefrom, the projecting portion being enclosed by a sleeve 16. The carbon poles 13, 14 are directed towards one another and separated by a space containing the bulb 19 which is mounted in a reflector 24. The zinc shell of cell 11 is connected to the lamp cap casing by a metal strip 17, while a metal strip 18 secured to the carbon pole 14 of cell 12 terminates in a button-shaped end 20 adapted to be moved in or out of contact with the central contact 21 of the bulb upon movement of the cell 12. The movable contact 20 is surrounded bv an annular member 22 secured to the inner wall of the casing 10 to restrict the longitudinal or rotary movement of the cell 12 and its contact 20. The cells 11 and 12 are connected in series by a metal strip 23 secured to the carbon pole of cell 11 and making a sliding contact with the zinc shell of cell 12. The arrangement may be modified in order that cells of the type described in Specification 414,582, [Group XXXVI], may be used. In a further modification the lamp bulb is mounted at one end of a tubular casing, in contact with the carbon pole of a fixed cell, the relatively movable cell at the other end of the casing having a contact strip offset eccentrically from its central carbon pole and arranged to make contact with a similar contact strip secured to the zinc shell of the fixed cell when the movable cell is rotated.
