Abstract

891,629. Inertia switches; mercury switches. JUHASZ, L. Aug. 5, 1960 [June 1, 1959], No. 18577/59. Class 38 (5). [Also in Groups XI and XVIII] An electric indicator lamp adapted to be secured to the person comprises a casing enclosing a battery, an electric light bulb mounted in the casing, a switch for connecting the bulb to the battery which is unaffected by the position of the casing but can be operated by a sharp shock and means for securing the casing to the person. The bulb is threaded into a disc at the base of a recess 10 in the casing and the centre contact 14 of the bulb contacts one surface of a rechargeable nickel-cadmium battery accommodated in the recess. A spring 25 extending round part of the recess engages the periphery of the battery and terminates at one end in a kinked part 25a. Outside the recess is a circular wall 9 forming a channel 8 housing a springy connector 30, one end of which terminates adjacent the part 25a and the other engages one pole of a mercury switch 32, the other pole of which is connected to a strip 33 engaging an extension on the disc. An operating lever 40 in one position presses the end of the connector 30 into contact with the part 25a whereby the circuit of the lamp can be closed by the mercury switch which comprises a bead of mercury enclosed in a narrow tube so that the position of the bead is not altered altered by change of position of the casing but only by a sharp jerk. The mercury switch may be replaced by a switch having a spring-biased moving element stable in two extreme positions. Alternatively, a magnetic bias may be used.
