Abstract
519,372. Internal-expanding brakes. WILLIAMS, S. B. R. Sept. 20, 1938, No. 27432. [Class 103 (i)] An internal expanding brake comprises a series of shoes expanded by simultaneously operated rotary cams or wedge members. In Fig. 1, a series of shoes 2 are engaged each by a cam 8 pivoted at 11 and having toothed engagement with a ring 4 rotatably mounted on the back plate. The brake is operated by an external lever on one of the cam, spindles. A link 15 extends from near one end of each shoe and the ring 4 and this end 18 is tapered and has tongue-and-groove engagement with the end 19 of the adjacent shoe. The spindle of one of the cams carries an external operating lever. In a modification, the teeth of the cam members are extended to engage teeth on the shoes and the ends of the shoes are guided in a combined radial and peripheral movement by fixed curved blocks. The arrangement of the parts may be such that the drag of the shoes when applied tends either to increase the application or to reduce it.
