Abstract

518,251. Railway - vehicle centre - bearings. BEYER, PEACOCK, & CO., Ltd., and JACKSON, S. Dec. 1, 1938, No. 35025. [Class 103 (vi)] In a centre bearing for articulated locomotives and like vehicles, in order to prevent the ingress of grit &c. and thereby to reduce wear, the female element 5 is disposed in an inverted position above and surrounding the male element 6, while renewable wearing-pieces 11, 13, are provided for the vertical working surfaces of the female element. As shown, the male element 6 is also provided with a renewable wearing ring 7 which has an upstanding peripheral lip 7<1> serving to retain the lubricant between the horizontal working surfaces. The latter preferably comprise renewable plates 8, 9 of manganese steel, asbestos or like wear-resisting material with a similar loose plate 10 interposed. The vertical working surfaces 11, 13 of the female element are adapted for adjustment, e.g., by wedges 12 or by the insertion of shims 14. Modifications are described in which the loose plate 10 is omitted, and in which a loose solid or split ring is inserted between the vertical working surfaces 7, 11.
