Abstract

717,815. Thrust bearings. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Dec. 5, 1952, No. 30859/52. Class 12(1) A thrust bearing for ar axle box comprises a thrust block 14 having a flat thrust face 34 of cast bronze, and lugs 24 on the block which are rotatably confined in recesses 26 in an end plate 16, the block being resiliently supported against the end plate by a conical ring 42 of synthetic rubber and so on bonded to conical metal rings 44, 46, which rubber ring is pre-loaded when the end cap is bolted into place so that the lugs 24 are adapted normally to seat against an annular flange 18 of the box through shims 20 which may be varied in thickness or number to vary the space between the axle and thrust block. The block has an annular flat face 40 which abuts against the bottom of the recess 28 if the axle engages the block with sufficient force to overcome the resilient pad 42. A ring 12 collects oil from the roller bearing and delivers it to a cavity 36 and an annular groove 35 eccentric to the block, which block is also provided with a shallow drain groove 52. A screw 56 holds the end cap, pad 42, and the block together for handling as a unit during assembly. A groove 37 is provided in the block to indicate wear of the thrust face and the conical recess in the end cap is provided to assist cooling. In a modification the end cap is extended to provide support for an axle driven generator.
