Class 103(6) [Also in Group XXXIV] A pivot centre for articulated and bogie locomotives comprises a female member consisting of fixed and adjustable bearing blocks 1, 2, with diametrically-opposed clearances 8 between them and a male pivot member 4, the latter having a flat bottom bearing plate 5 which rests on a flat plate 6 disposed below the blocks 1, 2. To allow for a certain amount of tilting. the member 4 is fitted with a renewable ring 7 in the form of a truncated cone, as described in Specification 647,480, and the female member 1, 2 is machined to the same contour. The adjustable bearing block 2 is permanently urged towards the member 4 by a spring-pressed wedge 9 so that any wear that occurs is automatically taken up. The wedge, which has one face in contact with a fixed block 10 whilst the other engages the horizontally-movable block 2, is loaded by coacting, horizontallydisposed helical springs 11, 12 connected by a bolt 13 passing through a hole 27 in the wedge. The assembly is housed in an oiltight container comprising a casting 14 covered by a plate 15 through which the member 4 projects. In a modification, the wedge is urged between the blocks 2, 10 by one end of a rocker lever, the other end being engaged by a helical compression spring disposed on the side of the assembly remote from the wedge In both forms the taper of the wedge is such that the bearing block 2 can be forced away from the block 1, for example. by an excessive tilting movement of the locomotive or by the entry of the male member when the superstructure of the locomotive is lowered into position on assembly.
