Abstract
1,081,466. Railway vehicle undercarriages; side bearings. AMSTED INDUSTRIES Inc. Sept. 10, 1964, No. 37074/64. Heading B7L. [Also in Division F2] A railway truck side bearing comprises a base member 2 having side and end walls 3, 3a, 4 extending from a bottom (6) to form a chamber 7, and a friction shoe 12 having a friction wall 18 and side and end flanges 22, 23 extending from a top wall 17 into the chamber 7, the friction wall 18 and side wall 3 having respectively V-shaped friction surfaces 19, 8 with plane friction surfaces 21, 9 on either side, the V-shaped friction surfaces being biased into contact by resilient means between top and bottom walls. The resultant means comprises two springs (13) engaged in inclined seats (14, 16). Flanges 11 are attached to the upper side of a bolster and a truck body rests on a pad 29, compressing the springs so that they bias wall 18 against wall 3, friction between these walls reducing relative movements of truck and bolster. The coplanar surfaces 21, 9 engage only after surfaces 19, 8 become worn. A bolt 28 limits displacement of the shoe 12.
